Those lighting effects are looking nice. This over-the-top violence is so great, I definitely wanted to do this kinda thing when I was 12 making GCS games By the way, you can increase your DOS cycles to make the game run with less lag. CTRL+F12, or look for cycles= in your dosbox.conf. I've found 20000 cycles to be optimal.

Yeah I've experimented a bit with that I've never went full on to 20 when playing game.
Like when I started with the game 8,000 felt good but the more I added graphically to the levels I noticed the timing with some of the animations especially when there are multiple occurring, the timing was just off and it was hard to trigger things so I increased to around 10,000. And things went pretty smooth for a while but the further I got in I now play around 11 386.
One of the quarks I have had with the speed.. schizoid here in the group has done absolutely amazing work with the MIDI. But I noticed going in between the game and GCS menu, sometimes the music does not perfectly work with some of the cutscenes. He choreographed the music to go perfectly with some of the cutscenes. So I know too slow and it misses but I've never tried over shooting going all the way to 20K. So I'll have to try that..
And I just have to put a plug in here, schizoid knows GCS music there was a learning curve but he has it dialed in and is doing some phenomenal things for this project if anybody needs help or advice on how to make music. He is the man I have no idea how to do it, all I know is that what he's done has made the game better than I could have done on my own the music is top notch.
The one time I definitely bump dosbox speed up, when I'm compiling final game press make final oh heck yeah I want to run through that quick.
A final note you said over the top. Yes when I was a kid I wanted to take it over the top as well. And here I am with the luxury of a little maturity a little more know how. But I took everything in this game over the top. Some of which is too much for YouTube,.. it's not my goal to offend, but more for the shock Factor to grab attention.. and as much to fulfill what I would have wanted my game to look like when I was younger.
So far other than the videos I've been producing on YouTube it's just been me and schizoid playing and experiencing this as it's not complete, and I want to get closer to complete before I release something for others to play... I do not desire to have five different half finished versions floating around on the internet. My intent is to have something that comes off sure amateur but a little bit more professional and refined. But definitely before I am finished I want to make a beta version and share it here with the community to check for bugs and overall flavor to make sure I'm hitting it right.
If I remember correctly, currently the open world game has 21 Maps Incorporated. I made it to point B a couple weeks ago, there's a few more tricks I want to pull off and then come back through polishing little aspects here and there as well I have a lot of GCS menu Graphics left to create I think currently I'm somewhere in between 100 and 200 images that GCS menu utilizes. It's a real treat for those who might feel Nostalgia toward the GCS

Awesome. Yeah I grew up on Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of the Triad, the former being shocking and offensive and the latter incredibly over the top. Such fun. They both inspired me on GCS projects and hindered them, because I was really struggling to do the things those games were doing. With the stuff we're all discovering I feel like a commercially viable game could have been made at the time even with the engine being a little out of date. Mainly I'm just discovering how capable this engine really was with full knowledge of what it was able to do at the time, and in the hands of someone mature who knew what they were doing. When you're a kid it's hard to lock onto complex themes without doing too little or too much. Nowadays that doesn't matter. But there does seem to be a resurgence of people into classic shooters, indie games with interesting storylines, stuff built on old tech, etc. Back in the 90s there really wasn't an indie game dev scene... we were it lol, but there was no thirst for really weird artsy handcrafted retro stuff like there is now. It's a good time to be doing this kinda thing. One of the things I'm determined to do is get sampled music working in GCS. You can definitely use a CD player TSR to start playing CD Audio when you start the game, but managing the music is more of a problem. In theory I've found a way to do it between cutscenes by hooking a custom EXE into PNOCOMP, but interrupting the game to change music is not helpful. I've tried to do it with my own GCS TSR but just haven't gotten that to work either sadly. I may just go the MIDI route, and if I do, I know who to contact. Definitely looking forward to playing your game when it's done. No sooner, no later, when it's good and ready

That seems to be shaping up to become a fantastic title. Can't wait to play it, but take your time to get everything just right. It really looks like you've put in more work into this single title than most of the 3DGCS shovelware combined Playing all those 2.5D raycasting shooters back in the 90s was a blast. RotT, Duke3D, Doom, Exhumed, Witchaven etc. and the whole violence discussion around them. What a great time that was in retrospective!

Back around the covid 2020 I noticed huge surge in Boomer shooter genre and with this project I'm definitely trying to take advantage of that. Throughout the game I've put little nods to some of the grates, leaving a little flavor of nostalgia. Example when you first boot the game menu plays a short fli, but just before the menu appears on the screen, I created a blue screen similar to the rating image on Wolfenstein.. but in the fine print I made a list of anything that might be considered nasty in the game like consider yourself warned. So like that nod to Wolfenstein there's a handful of nods to the greats in the game.
